Pascal Smet is State Secretary for the Brussels-Capital Region for Urbanism and Heritage, European and International Relations, Foreign Trade and Fire Fighting and Emergency Medical Assistance. He has one major driver and source of inspiration for his work in Brussels. The city itself. As former Minister of Mobility and Public Works (2014-2019), he was able to fully realize his dream for sustainable urban development. This means, among other things, that the public space is configurated differently. More space for better public transport, more space for cyclists and pedestrians.
Today, Pascal Smet is State Secretary for the Brussels-Capital Region for Urbanism and Heritage and wants to give Brussels a "face" and put it on the international map as the cosmopolitan, creative and entrepreneurial metropolis that it is. His ambition is to give the Brussels public space back to the people of Brussels: “We will give less space to the car and use that space to create beautiful places where young and old can play, walk, cycle, relax or simply enjoy. That is why I am going to protect and renovate our architectural heritage, and I am also going for new, high-profile buildings and squares in the city.” Since 2016 and on, he participated to several World Urban Fora, the Prague Declaration and Mexico in 2016, in Quito and Malaysia afterwards.
Local authorities, like municipalities, cities and regions are collectively gaining power in global governance. Local authorities acquire an increasingly significant demographic, economic and media weight and converges today around general or specific themes, especially when they cluster together in networking organizations. In the framework of the activities within Metropolis and FMDV where Brussels is the treasurer and vice president of the organizations, the State Secretary collaborates among other cities and regions through Urban Innovation. Thanks to this implication among Metropolis and FMDV, he is committed to representing, defending and amplifying the voices of local and regional governments also in other networks such as the Assembly of European Region or Eurocities.
