Over the last decade, the world has witnessed a rise in number of displacement crises, due to the impacts of conflict, natural disasters, and climate change. While efforts to assist displaced populations often focus on camp settings, displacement has taken on an increasingly urban dimension with the majority of IDPs and refugees now seeking refuge in urban areas, where safety, shelter, basic services and livelihoods are often more readily accessible. In displacement contexts such as Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Iraq, and Syria, the rapid growth of urban populations has unfolded in an unplanned and informal manner, and as displaced populations face acute vulnerabilities, this creates challenges for accessing adequate housing, food, basic and social services, and land tenure rights. Acting on the front lines of urban crises, local authorities face huge challenges related to the social inclusion of displaced people and populations in vulnerable situation, but without having the necessary resources and capacities. To ensure that the human rights of displaced persons, including youth and women, are protected and that they have a possibility to shape urban development, innovative, integrated, and inclusive approaches to urban planning, HLP rights and governance are needed. This event aims to share and showcase the impact of selected projects that aim to enhance social inclusion and foster rights-based approaches for displaced populations, including a focus on localized durable solutions used by actors across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus, featuring experiences from Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Ethiopia, Iraq and Syria.
1. To provide a platform for sharing integrated and impactful approaches, practices, and foster partnerships between UN-Habitat and other actors in the humanitarian-development-peace nexus and for durable solutions in displacement contexts; 2. To increase awareness of conflict-sensitive approaches that address the multidimensional and urban nature of humanitarian and displacement crises;
3. To bring together partners that are interested in advancing social inclusion, addressing displacement crises and the selected country contexts and regions to exchange and compile ideas and experiences;
4. To discuss pathways on global frameworks such as the New Urban Agenda, the SDGs, the SG’s Action Agenda on Internal Displacement and the DAC HDP nexus recommendation.
