The main purpose of the training is to prepare attendees to address urban growth in peripheral areas. The outcome of effective urban expansion planning is the creation of cities that are more sustainable, productive, and inclusive. Because of the simple nature of the proposed strategy, several cities have been able to move forward with urban expansion planning without extensive support. In that regard, the training seeks to empower participants to make and implement their own urban expansion plans. The training will also introduce considerations around accurate forecasting of future growth. This will include the presentation of techniques that city governments have successfully used to anticipate the quantity and location of future urban expansion. The goal of this is to empower local planners and civic leaders to think more critically about the likely future urban expansion that will take place in their city. The training will also introduce strategies and approaches for land acquisition for infrastructure, including community consultation as well as outright purchase, land swaps, and other options. The goal of this is to provide real and valid options that city leaders can consider when seeking to acquire land for arterial roads. The training will also introduce climate and hazard considerations and will highlight data sources that city governments can use to learn about the risks that they will be exposed to due to climate change and extreme events. The goal of this is to encourage leaders, even leaders of secondary cities in developing countries, to incorporate climate risk data into their urban management and urban planning.
Overall the main objective of the training is to transfer a simple and effective methodology to carry out Climate Resilient Urban Expansion Planning in rapidly growing cities. More specifically, the training aims to: Position the urgency of local governments and stakeholders to act rapidly to signal development, so it is sustainable, inclusive, and productive. Promote a simple and non-costly methodology that can be used in cities in the global south. Create a network of potential institutions, local governments, and stakeholders willing to get hands-on with the methodology to spread its content and pilot it.
