Summary

Aligned with SDGs 5 and 11 in achieving gender equality and sustainable urban development, this training will start by showing examples of gender inequality and equality in some EU cities. It will touch upon the following dimensions: -representation and participation -governance -economic equality -public services -planning and public space -migrant integration In small groups and with different interactive techniques, participants will discuss and test tools on how negative trends can be turned over with gender mainstreaming and innovative public procurement. Gender mainstreaming involves the integration of a gender perspective into the preparation, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies, regulatory measures and spending programmes, with a view to promoting equality between women and men, and combating discrimination. Public procurement can be a valuable tool for gender mainstreaming. Workshop participants will gain: • a better understanding of gender equality, and how gender as a cross-cutting issue impacts across all areas of urban life and participation • an overview of gender responsive public procurement and how to apply this approach to public contracts in their city • concrete suggestions and tips as to how to improve gender balance, intersectionality and power sharing within multi-stakeholder local processes • knowledge about variety of accessible URBACT tools to support them in the steps to mainstream gender in urban action planning, delivery of projects and monitoring performance While this training is dedicated to civil servants working in local and regional administrations, the end beneficiaries- if the tools and knowledge gained are implemented at local levels – are all citizens.

Objectives

1) Inspire participants and help them understand how a gender-sensitive approach can improve their city or municipality. 2) Give an overview of and signposting to tools and methods for integrating gender into sustainable urban development processes 3) Explain and discuss how to integrate the gender dimension into public procurement 4) Allow participants to test out one tool in a peer-learning environment 5) The ultimate goal is to train participants in order to pass on the training to fellow colleagues and co-develop their own vision for gender equality in their city or municipality.
