City WORKS – an innovative toolkit to support the strategic planning and implementation of global agendas for sustainable cities and communities

The main goal of this training event is to provide an overview of the innovative City WORKS approach (objectives, functionalities, target group, products, and materials) and exchange about practical application, discussing and showcasing applications experiences and possibilities, lessons learnt, and challenges related to the process. In an interactive and practice-oriented format, participants will be invited to apply different City WORKS tools and bring in their own perspective and experiences and exchange with peers. City WORKS is a toolkit aiming at supporting the implementation of global agendas at local level. It enables city leaders, urban planners and other urban stakeholders to analyse, plan and implement policies for sustainable urban development in their specific context and according to their needs. Offering a process-oriented approach, its corresponding steps and tools are meant to be easily integrated into typical planning cycles. In that way, City WORKS follows an integrated approach for a coherent local implementation of global sustainability agendas, bearing in mind the different national strategies and priorities to leave no one and no place behind.  Using City WORKS can result in a wide variety of outcomes.  It can be useful in designing an awareness raising campaign or compiling a report on local contributions to global goals. It can also support complex processes such as the alignment of municipal plans with global targets, the creation or review of a city vision or the detailed development of new projects and measures.   The City WORKS toolkit is designed in such a way that the steps and tools can be easily integrated into existing processes and adapted to context-specific needs. It is determined and influenced by a broad set of variables that can produce more than one result in every case.
