The training event will guide national and local officials, policy makers, urban development practitioners, urban designers and planners, real estate developers, builders, economists and citizens on how to design sustainable urban futures by tapping into the city’s unique assets and into latest technologies.
One-size-fits-all urban development model largely failed our cities. Sustainable but slow-moving local practices, however, don’t match today’s rapid urbanization needs either. We want to reconcile the need for rapidly building affordable urban fabric with the need for sustainable, liveable and unique urban realms.
To achieve this aim, UNICITI’s not-for-profit initiative A Third Way of Building Asian Cities brings together local knowledge and cutting-edge technologies through innovative practice-oriented research and pilot projects. Launched in 2019 at the 55th ISOCARP World Urban Congress in Jakarta, it is now supported by 16 International Experts and 100+ Volunteers of Change from nearly 40 countries.
The training event will share insights into a few break-through solutions identified by the initiative. It is an interactive session where you get a chance to network and exchange your ideas and perspectives. We offer 4 mini hands-on sessions demonstrating context-driven interventions at different urban morphological layers:
Step 1: Identifying the object: demonstrate how unique local building typologies can be generated through analyzing and reusing the existing building profiles.
Step 2: Creating a 2-dimensional plan: strategize open spaces such as streets, highways, squares and green spaces to reduce impacts of urban heat island effect.
Step 3: Adding a 3-dimensional cluster: test a high-density-low-rise urban development model for an improved climate resilience, sustainability, quality of life, cultural vibrancy and social interactions while making room for rapid urban growth.
Step 4: Commercial implementation: analyze and promote economic viability of sustainable urban solutions among builders and real estate developers.
