Integrated Governance in Spatial Planning for a More Just, Green, and Healthy Urban Future

Summary

Urban regeneration is a central topic in both developing and developed countries to bring new life into urban areas in decline and activate new functions and services when old ones do not respond to contemporary social needs. Common criteria among institutional, financial, and real estate operators need to be established to assess the sustainability of urban regeneration interventions. Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) dimensions should be taken into consideration with specific reference to urban regeneration, environmental, social, and economic challenges, even if standardized criteria and indicators are still missing. In fact, both land-use choices and investments need to follow a common and transparent assessment approach to pursue environmental equity, and efficiency and leave a positive socio-economic impact. Such an approach can be linked to the Agenda 2030 framework contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event focuses on the international action to integrate urban regeneration into ecological transition processes, also in light of recovery policies and innovative approaches and practices by institutional and business actors in the sector.

Objectives

The event aims to bring together relevant stakeholders in urban regeneration allowing them to create synergies and collaborations aiming at more inclusive and sustainable development of communities. They would have the chance to exchange knowledge and best practices for the integration of ESG approaches and principles for urban regeneration and discuss methodologies, challenges, and findings from their experience in different contexts. The event will set the base for a multisectoral collaboration in the development of global guidelines and monitoring frameworks that support the creation of social value in urban regeneration. This networking opportunity contributes to the efforts to build a community of urban actors and researchers to advance knowledge production on urban regeneration.
