Resilience for All

In its chapter on `Urban Areas,' the IPCC highlighted the resilience of urban areas as a central research topic and policy focus. As cities race to meet their climate resilience goals using various planning measures, a rising challenge is understanding and addressing the unequal impacts of these measures across diverse socio-economic groups. The most vulnerable are disproportionately affected by climate change and unfairly affected by future economic, institutional, and infrastructural transitions that perpetuate inequalities. We propose a 'Resilience of All- a workshop-style training event to deliberate the intersection of two key dialogues of the World Urban Forum - Dialogue 1 on "Equitable Futures" and Dialogue 6 on "Urban Resilience." Together both are integral to advancing sustainability in future urban regions. Instructors will draw upon their diverse expertise in engineering, urban planning, decision-making, policy-making, and data analytics to present the latest knowledge processes on building urban resilience and equitable futures. We will present planning support tools, methods, and bridging interventions to inform socio-economic policies for equitable distribution of resources and measures to assess and integrate resilience in planning processes. Participants will learn from design-driven and data-driven tools and methods applied to real case studies that manage resilience and promote equity in spatially explicit ways. This work emerges from the collective research experience from two thematic labs at the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. The training event targets urban planners, policymakers, civil servants, and scientists working on various aspects of urban resilience and urban equity in the light of climate change.
