The war in Ukraine is mainly an Urban planning and governance. Some cities such as Mariupol have been completely destroyed while in others the damage has been limited to specific neighborhoods. On the other end some towns and cities have been largely spared from war damage but have provided a safe haven for the massive displacement that has occurred, within cities, across Ukrainian territory and national boundaries. The Global Alliance for Urban Crises (the Alliance) was set up as an inclusive platform bringing together local governments, built environment professionals, academics, and humanitarian and development actors, working to arrive at systemic change framed by the Urban Crises Charter. The networking event will review how the humanitarian response and initial recovery efforts are being tailored to the urban context in Ukraine and discuss the relevance of the tools and approaches developed through the Global Alliance for Urban Crises and contextualized by various members in speCIfic contexts. The networking event will discuss the following questions, building off also concrete examples of good practice: 1)How is the humanitarian response been localized and what is the role of local governments in Ukraine? 2)How to activate better partnerships between local governments, humanitarian/peace/development actors and communities, using urban profiling and area-based approaches at multiple sale levels? 3)How to ensure better access to financial and human capacity for local governments and local service providers across the humanitarian – development continuum? 4)What are priorities to better manage urban displacement and facilitate intermediate solutions?
To further prioritize action to strengthen the role of local governments in the humanitarian and recovery response in Ukraine To provide pathways for improved and joined-up humanitarian and recovery responses that are anchored in local capacities and practices in Urban planning and governance context To discuss ways to strengthen available tools and approaches to better inform joined-up humanitarian and recovery action in urban contexts
