Around the world, countries are grappling with significant solid waste challenges driven by factors like rapid urbanization, population growth, and inadequate infrastructure. Annually, billions of tons of solid waste are generated globally, with a substantial portion being municipal waste. Insufficient waste management infrastructure results in inefficient collection, open dumping, and waste burning, exacerbating environmental degradation. Urgent action is needed to address these challenges and mitigate their impacts.
Various global initiatives, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasize the importance of integrating environmental considerations into economic sectors for effective natural resource management. However, despite efforts at both national and local levels, many countries struggle to implement integrated solid waste management systems. These challenges intersect with broader sustainability goals, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies to address the evolving global waste crisis. Collaboration between governments, industries, and communities is essential to develop sustainable solutions and ensure a cleaner and healthier future for all.
This event on advancing waste management for sustainable development will delve into the implementation and impact of the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT) and present the developed manual for this tool implementation. This tool aims to revolutionize municipal solid waste management (MSWM) practices to address multiple SDGs. By optimizing waste management practices, WaCT seeks to reduce GGE, conserve resources, enhance air and water quality, bolster community health, engage citizens, increase disaster resilience, and fortify economic well-being. Strategies encompass landfill gas capture, enhanced recycling programs, waste-to-energy technologies, improved waste collection systems, educational outreach, policy measures, and community engagement.
The event will convene key stakeholders in urban development for a panel discussion on optimizing and enhancing waste management practices and systems using WaCT. Government decision-makers, civil society, grassroots organizations, financiers/donors, technical experts, and the private sector are all invited to participate in collaborative, multi-sectoral dialogues on future pathways. Serving as a platform to deliberate on progress, challenges, and prospects in advancing waste management for sustainable development, the networking event aims to leverage innovative tools and collaborative efforts. Together, stakeholders can work towards achieving a carbon-neutral future while fostering economic prosperity and environmental stewardship. This event will set the stage for subsequent discussions on necessary steps forward and the potential for collaboration with other stakeholders to amplify the impact of discussed practices and achievements.
1)Knowledge Sharing: Facilitate the exchange of best practices, lessons learned, and innovative approaches in waste management among stakeholders. 2)Stakeholder Engagement: Encourage active participation and dialogue among government officials, policymakers, industry leaders, academia, and civil society organizations to foster collaboration and consensus-building. 3)WaCT Tool Review: Provide a platform to discuss the progress, achievements, and challenges encountered during the implementation of waste management initiatives, particularly focusing on the utilization of the Waste Wise Cities Tool (WaCT). 4)Policy Alignment: Discuss strategies for aligning national and regional policies with sustainable waste management goals, including regulatory frameworks, incentives, and enforcement mechanisms. 5)Promotion of Innovation and Dissemination of Results: Showcase innovative technologies, tools, and methodologies that have the potential to revolutionize waste management practices and contribute to a circular economy.
