Summary

This networking event tackles the complexities of border and peripheral regions in the Middle East. Using Egypt as a case study, discussions explore tensions along borders, resource wealth in remote areas, and community-centered development. Through collaboration between urban planners, policymakers, NGOs, and the private sector, the event seeks solutions for these dynamic zones. The long-term goal is a regional network dedicated to tackling these challenges and fostering sustainable, secure, and inclusive urban environments. This network can strengthen regional cooperation, promote sustainable development, and build inclusive communities. Ultimately, the event paves the way for a more equitable future for these crucial areas in the Middle East.

Objectives

1. Understanding the Dynamics of Border Cities by:
o Analyze the interplay between political tensions and the often-unofficial yet vibrant flow of people, goods, and ideas across borders.
o Explore the delicate balance between border security and fostering economic activity in these regions.
o Discuss innovative urban planning strategies for border cities, considering infrastructure, resource allocation, and population fluctuations.
2. Developing Strategies for Peripheral Regions:
o Define "peripheral" regions and differentiate them from border areas, focusing on geographically distant or resource-rich areas with limited access to infrastructure and development.
o Address the complex issue of sustainable development in peripheral regions, ensuring environmental protection alongside economic growth. The Habiba community in Nwiubaa, Egypt, can serve as a case study for this objective.
o Promote inclusive and participatory approaches to development in peripheral regions, ensuring local voices are heard and projects address community needs.
3. Fostering Collaboration Among Stakeholders:
o Facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaboration among urban planners, policymakers, NGOs, academics, and the private sector.
o Identify key challenges and opportunities specific to the Middle East context.
o Explore potential collaborative and initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges.
o Develop innovative solutions for sustainable and inclusive development in border and peripheral regions
