The session will share insights on urban observatory governance, financing and structures. It will also focus on multi-level governance techniques using the case of South African District Development Model (DDM) and its application at local level.
Participants will learn about and engage on urban observatories and multi-level governance techniques to build well-governed and sustainable towns and cities by:
• Outlining available institutional options for urban observatories (governance, financing models, structures etc)
• Delineating urban data science - data collection, analytics and visualisation
• Exploring case studies of two urban observatories from around the globe
• Outlining multi-level governance and integrated development planning approaches
• Outlining the South African District Development Model (DDM)
• Exploring the DDM case study focusing on the Sedibeng District Hub in South Africa
• Translating data, research, policy and practice into sustainable development
The objectives of the session are to:
• Deepen participants' knowledge of key elements on urban observatories and multi-level governance approaches
• Showcase global and local innovation and best practice
• Promote knowledge sharing and mutual learning
• Strengthen multi-stakeholder coordination and partnerships vertically and horizontally
• Empower government and non-government stakeholders to work towards sustainable and resilient cities
