Cities on the move towards future proof Urban Mobility Planning, engaging voices from Ghana and Costa Rica

How can people-oriented mobility bring about social, economic and sustainable impulses? How can regional cooperation help effective use of resources? In what way does this feed into rural-urban linkages? This event will dive into challenges and opportunities for local government to steer their cities towards a sustainable, accessible and livable future. Most municipalities struggle with prioritization of activities because the urban area lies at the intersection of the social, economic and physical challenges. How to design urban areas to ensure equal opportunities for education, health services, job market and other basic human rights? Slowly, there is a worldwide mentality switch from car-centered mobility to people-centered mobility. This event aims to bridge the gap between the aspired well-balanced urban realities and the road to it by assessing tangible technical challenges and opportunities that are encountered locally in the Accra and San José metropolitan areas.​

Case 1: Costa Rica / Move with Costa Rican Municipalities towards Future-Proof Intermunicipal Mobility Planning: Learned Lessons from the mUEve Project ​

The "Move with Costa Rican Municipalities" project discussion will address the sustainable mobility planning challenges faced by small and medium-sized municipalities in Costa Rica. It will showcase the collaborative efforts and capacity-building initiatives that are crucial for these municipalities to implement effective mobility solutions.​

Case 2: Ghana / City on the Move, Engaging Voices from Accra for Sustainable Urban Transport Planning ​

​

"City on the Move" will focus on sustainable and accessible urban transport in Accra, Ghana. This project discussion aims to engage voices from planning authorities in Accra with mobility experts to participate in shaping the future of urban transport planning through evidence-based practices and community engagement.​

​

The topic will feature pitches, setting the scene by showcasing the local realities and project ambitions, voiced by a local representative from Accra and the San José metropolitan area. The representatives will touch upon their mission, the obstacles, and the current solution. Topics that will be addressed include how the mentality switch took place at a political level, and what doors a project-based approach to tactical urbanism can open. A discussion panel will showcase a dialogue on a more practical level with technical experts to identify obstacles and how to overcome this. Participants will be encouraged to partake in the discussion to extend the knowledge exchange beyond Ghana and Costa Rica. ​

By the end, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities for sustainable urban transport in both countries. They will have identified key priorities and actionable steps for improving the transport system and fostering collaboration between stakeholders, and lessons that could be replicable on other cities.
