Summary

Cities worldwide face a rapidly intensifying range of climate-related challenges, demanding urgent, innovative, and localized responses to enhance resilience. Climate change impacts vary significantly by region, as evidenced by recent events across Malaysia, Turkey, Australia and the Asia-Pacific. By examining these challenges, the session on "Climate Resilient Cities: Local Actions, Financing, and Community-Focused Technology" will focus on practical solutions to mitigate climate impacts through local action, community finance, and technology-driven strategies. Some pressing climate challenges cities are grappling with include extreme flooding and urban drainage, rising temperatures and urban heat Islands, sea level rise and coastal erosion

This diverse array of climate impacts demonstrates the pressing need for cities to adopt locally-informed resilience strategies. At the WUF12 session, we will discuss these challenges alongside proven approaches, such as community-centered finance mechanisms, adaptive urban planning, and technology integration. Through collaborative exchange, cities can strengthen their defenses against climate threats and empower communities toward a sustainable future.

Objectives

1. Raise awareness about the importance of cities as homes and the need to prioritise climate resilience in urban development.
2. Explore the role of local finance mechanisms in funding climate resilience initiatives within cities, with a specific focus on disaster preparedness measures.
3. Highlight the significance of community-focused technology in enhancing urban resilience and fostering sustainable development.
4. Share best practices and success stories of cities that have effectively integrated local finance and technology to build climate resilience.
5. Facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of innovative approaches in urban resilience building.
