In ongoing commitments by cities to foster safer urban environments, there is an increasing need to expand proven practices that advance the principles of co-creation. The event is a culmination of a global peer learning series that kicked off during Urban October 2023, and will by November 2024 consist of five webinars and a summary report that highlight the efforts to promote safer cities across the world.
The Safer Cities initiative started as a collaboration between UN-Habitat, UCLG, Habitat Norway, and VibeLab, with the aim to share knowledge, foster mutual learning, and promote integrated solutions based on the UN System-wide Guidelines on Safer Cities and Human Settlements. The networking event will be supported by the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
Over the course of the peer review, the webinars delve into municipal safety policies, civil society initiatives, and innovative tools aimed at creating safer cities, bringing forth connections between safety aspects as it relate to women and girls, nighttime governance, green space, cultural interventions and climate adaptation, among others.
The peer review process identifies and engages cities that already have established city safety policies and programmes to consolidate knowledge of what has worked and what has not. It also strives to promote mutual learning and draw on innovations to demonstrate the solutions envisioned in the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda.
This WUF12 Networking Event will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on more than three decades of global city practices, and be part of a critical dialogue on urban governance and the importance of enhancing the well being of local communities and shaping safer cities for the future.
Based on the UN Safer Cities guidelines, the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda, our goal is to engage cities worldwide in developing accessible, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods through co-creation, inclusive processes, local policies and to promote innovative solutions. This would include aspects related to nighttime governance, an area that VibeLab is at the forefront of when it comes to supporting cities in these efforts.
The networking event will present a report that summarizes key lessons and policy recommendations from the peer-learning process, including best practice examples from cities and stakeholders that have established successful safety policies and programmes. It will also consolidate knowledge of best practices and advance mutual learning, as well as promote solutions and innovations in contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda. To this end, some panelists will in their discussion speak to the case studies and examples presented in the summary report and encourage actors to follow and to take action, be it at the grassroot or higher level of governance.
The event will conclude by soliciting ideas from the panelists and participants towards a renewed consolidation of a global knowledge platform that can serve cities as a repository for tools and practices, as well as highlighting transformative areas.
