Summary

In line with Ghana's commitment to localising the New Urban Agenda and advancing local actions towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development in partnership with the World Bank, European Union and GIZ will host a side event at WUF12. This significant event will serve as a platform to showcase Ghana’s achievement, challenges and lessons learnt with urban development and prospects for next decade. The event will also demonstrate Ghana’s commitment to sustainable urban development and management and its vision for the future of urban areas within the context of critical global policy frameworks such as the SDGs, New Urban Agenda, AU Agenda 2063 and the climate change and disaster risk reduction related Protocols and Agreements.

Objectives

The objective of the side event at WUF12 is to share critical milestones as well as challenges of Ghana's urban development over the years and the future of urban development in Ghana. Additionally, discussions during the event will provide a unique opportunity for stakeholders and participants to engage in discussions on a. Ghana's urban development journey - highlighting the successes and challenges; b. Addressing emerging urban challenges with a focus on building resilient and sustainable cities; c. Fostering and strengthening partnerships and collaborations for a coordinated response; and d. Integrating frameworks and local actions for urban resilience and transformation.
