Join us for the launch of the Hub for Housing Justice, a collaborative initiative led by a group of civil society networks and research organisations promoting anti-discriminatory, radically democratic, sustainable and caring housing futures.
This event will launch the Hub for Housing Justice, a collaborative initiative led by a group of civil society networks and research organisations that aims to advance housing justice by building upon and amplifying local, regional and international efforts.
The event will bring together key partners and allies to discuss the Housing Justice agenda, aiming to co-construct key messages and identify opportunities to advance such agenda in different global and local processes.
The event will be divided into three moments:
(1) Framing Housing Justice: four propositions – Hub partners will discuss key propositions to advance housing justice: Anti-discriminatory housing policy and practice (Rodrigo Faria G. Iacovini, Instituto Polis); Radically democratic forms of housing production (Lajana Manandhar, ACHR); Infrastructure for more just, sustainable and caring cities (Grace Chikumo, HIC); and Expanded knowledges for housing futures (Beth Chitekwe-Biti, SDI).
(2) Roundtable: How to realise a housing justice agenda? – Key actors from governments and international organisations will respond to the Hub's propositions, including Guilherme Simões, Secretário Nacional de Periferias (Government of Brazil), Xola Pakati, Deputy President, South African Local Government Association (SALGA), Albert Lladó (United Cities and Local Governments), Greg Munro (Cities Alliance), Brenda Pérez-Castro (Habitat for Humanity), and Francesca Lionetti (UN-Habitat).
(3) Discussion: Co-building key messages – Guided by inputs from Lorena Zarate (Global Platform for the Right to the City) the session will conclude with a discussion to co-develop key messages for the implementation of key resolutions adopted by the UN-Habitat Assembly and UN Habitat’s Strategic Plan.
The event will be convened by IIED researchers Alexandre Apsan Frediani, Camila Cociña and Paula Sevilla-Núñez, and different moments will be moderated by Stephanie Butcher (University of Sheffield) and Adriana Allen (Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL).
This session will have the following objectives:
- Informing the design and implementation of collaborations among civil society networks, researchers and multilateral organisations around the advancement of housing justice. Currently, different international partnerships are coming together in the field of housing. While it is important to promote more shared action in this field, it is also important to understand the added value, synergies and complementarities of such initiatives.
- Building synergies and identifying shared agendas around housing justice among civil society networks, research organisations and multilateral organisations. Housing justice is an agenda that has been able to talk to the demands and interests associated to diverse actors. At the same time, there are various definitions and nuances based on the perspective and experiences of different organisations and locations. We will use this opportunity to identify points of convergence and particularities around the housing justice agenda.
- Promoting and disseminating the activities of the Hub for Housing Justice, sharing concrete opportunities for participants to engage in learning exchanges, research initiatives as well as potential joint advocacy actions.
