Summary

This training session will introduce real-world case studies on mapping and data generation to address mostly "invisible" urban peripheries and disadvantaged areas. Through highly interactive, fast-paced lectures with speakers spanning several countries (Brazil, Kenya, Netherlands, UK, US), participants will get familiar with three initiatives which are engaging citizens living in deprived urban areas to generate high-quality data for transformative change: a) Community Mappers Kenya and Slum Dwellers International Know Your City Campaign (community-led); b) Brazil's "Mapa das Periferias" led by the National Secretary for the Peripheries of the Federal Ministry of Cities, presenting details of the methodology of "Mapeamento Popular" (government-led); c) IDEAMAPS Data Ecosystem, which will building justice-oriented data ecosystems combining urban analytics/AI with participatory action research in the pilot cities of Kano and Lagos (Nigeria) and Nairobi (Lagos) (research-lead).

The presentations will be followed by a world-cafe discussion, giving an opportunity to get in-depth insights into the methodologies, local contexts, opportunities and challenges of each initiative.

This session is designed for diverse stakeholders involved in urban policy and decision-making: communities and grassroots organisations; NGOs, and governmental agencies in various sectors (e.g., statistics offices, city planning, health, water and sanitation). They will also benefit from networking with other stakeholders and sharing their experiences, challenges and solutions.

Objectives

Participants will be better equipped to use innovative mapping and data co-production approaches to tackle the SDGs and improve living conditions in urban deprived areas, urban peripheries and informal settlements.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand several approaches to mapping urban deprived areas using community-led participatory mapping, open geospatial data and participatory urban analytics with Artificial Intelligence/Earth Observation.
- Know in detail three innovative case studies including SDI Know Your City Campaign, Brazil "Map of the Peripheries" and the IDEAMAPS justice-oriented urban data ecosystems.
- Assess the added value and cost-effectiveness of the several mapping approaches to monitor and progress SDGs in their local context.
- Network with other stakeholders facing similar challenges and exchange about their solutions.
