A 90-minute high-level event is planned to present, share, and exchange ideas with cities from other regions regarding the experience of the Network of Latin American and Caribbean Biodivercities and its role as a space to promote the formulation and financing of green urban projects.
The event will consist of two panels, preceded by a introduction and followed by a session for final reflections and
questions.
The introduction, delivered by a key authority of the Latin American and Caribbean Network of Biodivercities, will provide insights into the network, including its motivations for creation, governance structure, and tools available to its members.
The first panel, moderated by a representative from CAF and
featuring two women mayors from the network, will facilitate a global dialogue on the relevance of the Biodivercities model to a new development paradigm aligned with international commitments on sustainable urban development and the environment. This panel will highlight the importance of building alliances and networks of intermediary cities governments committed to combating the effects of climate change and global
biodiversity loss, in line with the United Nations resolution on Biodiverse and Resilient Cities, enacted on 2 June 2023 in Nairobi.
The second panel, moderated by a representative from CAF and featuring representatives from investment agencies of cities within the network, will discuss the role of the private sector and international capital funds in financing Biodivercities initiatives, along with opportunities for projects promoting the circular economy, biodiversity protection, and climate change adaptation in Latin American and Caribbean cities.
Finally, the concluding session, led by CAF's Urban Development Manager, will highlight key messages and challenges related to the formulation and financing of policies, programs, and projects for Biodivercities.
1. Promote the Latin American and Caribbean model of the Biodivercities network by facilitating the exchange of ideas and encouraging the creation of similar initiatives in other regions.
2. Highlight the role of intermediary cities in advancing a new development paradigm aligned with international commitments on sustainable urban development and environmental conservation.
3. Discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the formulation and financing of policies, programs and projects for Biodivercities, with a focus on mechanisms at the local level.
4. Identify potential sources of financing - global and regional - for programs and projects that help implement this vision of a more sustainable future.
5. Share lessons learned from the establishment of the network and promote the replication of successful instruments and practices among cities that aim to integrate urban development with the protection and restoration of biodiversity.
