Summary

This event brings experts, policymakers, planners, academicians, and activists together to explore and discuss scalable and adaptable damage assessment, mitigation, and rebuilding practices in post-war contexts. This session aims to uncover how diverse regions worldwide have successfully navigated the aftermath of conflict by integrating local traditions and cultural nuances into urban recovery efforts. The session will showcase the experiences of various countries, including Yemen, Syria, and Lebanon, and their potential relevance and scalability to the case of Sudan.
Participants will engage in interactive discussions, case study presentations, and panel debates to discuss specific instances of cities that have effectively managed crises amid armed conflict. This will include an examination of the roles that local leadership and community involvement play in enhancing urban areas' resilience. This topic can explore the methodologies, tools, and policies that have proven successful and how they can be adapted or ported in different contexts.
The session involves three main themes of scalable practices from other regions, including:
1. Emergency response and damage assessment
2. Needs Analysis and Prioritization
3. Post-War Recovery and Reintegration
4. Rebuilding Post-War cities
The program agenda is:
1. Introduction by moderator_ 10 minutes
2. Keynote on urban emergency response and post-war recovery: Learning from International Contexts. Introduce successful urban crisis management strategies, highlighting Mapping for Post-Conflict Recovery and adaptation to local contexts. 40 minutes.
3. Presentations: Sudan's challenges and opportunities in adopting global best practices within its unique cultural and traditional framework- 15 minutes
4. Discussion – 20 minutes
5. Call for contributions and synergies by the moderator, 5 minutes.

Objectives

The main objective of this session is to explore scalable and adaptable practices in post-war urban mapping and mitigation that have been successful in various parts of the world and to investigate how these can be tailored to respect and integrate local traditions and cultural contexts in the context of the ongoing conflict in Sudan. This approach acknowledges the uniqueness of each urban area while promoting the exchange of knowledge and strategies that can be modified to suit different environments. The session aims to answer how local and regional authorities and their associations and networks have effectively responded to urban crises, emphasizing scalable practices. The following outcomes are expected from the event:
• A collaborative framework that respects local traditions while incorporating global innovations in crisis management.
• A network of practitioners committed to adapting international best practices to local Sudanese settings.
• Strategic recommendations tailored for Sudan, combining global insights with local realities to enhance urban resilience.
