This event will showcase cutting-edge approaches designed to empower communities and cities worldwide to address critical global challenges. The event will present innovative and participatory planning tools that are designed to help communities and cities in both the global north and south respond to the urgent challenges of our time. The tools and project experiences will include the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Planning System Assessment/Global Planning Aid, which offers targeted support to strengthen local planning frameworks by identifying areas for improvement, and the UN-Habitat’s Our City Plans, an online platform that empowers local communities to design and implement sustainable urban development strategies. . The online tool and digital platform exemplify the technological revolution in planning and how these tools can enhance inclusive, participatory, innovative, resilient, and sustainable planning. These exemplary projects and digital tools demonstrate the transformative power of technology in the planning field. They pave the way for a more inclusive and participatory approach to planning, fostering resident engagement and the development of innovative, resilient, and sustainable solutions.
Additionally, data from the Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11) indicator 11.3.2, which focuses on civic engagement in urban planning and management, has been collected, and results and trends will be shared during the event.
The event will involve different perspectives and experiences from different sectors on how planning processes are best developed for active civic and stakeholder engagement in well-planned, sustainable communities and cities, adapted to local contexts in both the global north and south.
1. To share urban planning best practices and methodologies that can help cities implement participatory and civic engagement processes.
2. To present the innovative tools to prospective partners and donors to implement the tools in towns or cities across the different regions, particularly those that lack capacity and resources.
To present the SDG 11.3.2 indicator results and analysis regarding civic engagement in urban planning and management.
3. To promote the integration of participatory planning into a more holistic planning system reform.
4. To address the specific needs of deprived communities through Global Planning Aid.
5. To create a network of urban planners and city leaders interested in exchanging experiences and using planning methodologies.
