Summary

Countries in Latin America and the Caribbean are particularly vulnerable to exacerbated tropical climate hazards due to climate change, including extreme warm temperatures and precipitation patterns, coastal flooding and erosion and increase in intensity and frequency of tropical cyclones. These hazards negatively impact the population and built environments, including basic infrastructure such as housing, public infrastructure related to water supply, sanitation, transportation, and energy supply facilities. To respond to these challenges in the infrastructure sector, national governments, city authorities, federal institutions and local population, have implemented initiatives to address climate vulnerability and increase local infrastructure resilience.

Panelists representing local and national government entities and organizations will have the opportunity to share insights, experiences, best practices, and challenges encountered in implementing climate-resilient projects for urban infrastructure. This interactive exchange of knowledge and expertise will provide attendees with valuable real-world examples of successful initiatives and the practical obstacles that need to be overcome. By hearing directly from those involved in the planning and execution of these projects, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the strategies and approaches that have proven effective in enhancing urban resilience to climate change.

In addition to sharing experiences, the event will explore into key themes that are crucial for advancing climate-resilient urban infrastructure. Sustainable building materials will be a focal point, exploring innovative materials and construction techniques that minimize environmental impact and enhance the durability of infrastructure against climate-related hazards. Discussions will also center around sustainable infrastructure programs, examining comprehensive strategies for integrating resilience into urban development plans and policies.

Furthermore, the event will highlight the importance of community engagement strategies in building climate-resilient infrastructure. Recognizing that communities are on the front lines of climate impacts and often possess valuable local knowledge, the event will explore ways to empower communities and involve them in the decision-making process. By fostering inclusive and participatory approaches, governments and stakeholders can ensure that infrastructure projects are tailored to meet the needs and priorities of the communities they serve.

The event will also showcase innovative technologies that offer potential solutions for enhancing urban resilience to climate change. From smart infrastructure systems to renewable energy technologies, these innovations can transform the way cities adapt and respond to climate challenges.

Objectives

1. Facilitate knowledge sharing among local and national government entities on experiences, best practices, and challenges in implementing climate-resilient urban infrastructure projects.
2. Explore key themes such as sustainable building materials, infrastructure programs, community engagement strategies, and innovative technologies to enhance urban resilience to climate change.
3. Foster partnerships and collaborations among stakeholders to identify opportunities for future initiatives and strengthen the region's capacity to address climate change impacts on urban development effectively.
