Summary

UN-Habitat will reveal progress in the implementation of the Sustainable Urban Resilience for the Next Generation (SURGe) Initiative, first launched at COP27 with the support of ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. This initiative plays a key role scaling urban resilience by translating global developments and national commitments into localized cross-sectoral climate action, providing a space for local governments and actors to voice their needs in national and international climate agendas. New partnerships and activities will be announced addressing the challenges cities face in scaling urban resilience and adapting to climate change.

Ahead of COP29, this press briefing will outline plans for a newly established SURGe Secretariat and announce key partnerships and upcoming activities aimed at scaling up urban climate solutions, further strengthening global efforts toward sustainable cities and communities.

Objectives

- Outline UN-Habitat’s progress on operationalizing the SURGe Initiative.
- Give updates on the establishment of the SURGe Secretariat.
- Highlight new partnerships and activities designed to scale up urban climate solutions.
