Summary

?‍♀️? Join us for an inspiring event on the power of walkable cities! ??‍♂️

Discover how walkability is reshaping cities for a more equitable and sustainable future at our upcoming event. We’ll begin with an engaging presentation that explores the core concepts of walkability and the transformative impact of the Walkable City Prize Initiative in Brazil—a national award recognizing public projects that have improved walkability in Brazilian cities.

Since its inception, the Walkable City Prize, organized by Instituto Caminhabilidade with support from Walk21 and ITDP Brasil, has mobilized 16 cities and featured 60 innovative projects from all regions of Brazil, celebrating urban interventions that promote pedestrian-friendly environments.

?️ Award categories include small (up to 100k people), medium (100k–800k), and large cities (800k+), with projects spanning nine key areas like urban requalification, traffic calming measures, accessibility, and tactical urbanism.

A distinguished jury of city experts has selected the winning projects, announced annually on International Pedestrian Day. The goal? To make these successful interventions accessible, inspiring more cities to prioritize walkability in their urban planning.

? Hear from project leaders who are making real change on the ground!
Two leaders will present groundbreaking projects, such as:
- Fortaleza: Municipal Walkability Plan, Parque Rachel de Queiroz and other urban initiatives (Fortaleza) - Pioneer plan in the topic in Brazil and a linear park in underserved areas, integrating wetlands for climate resilience
- Benevides and Belem: Rua da Gente and other initiatives - Open street programme in a amazon city to invite people to come closer to local leaders and give the spaces back to people mainly for children and caregivers.

These projects are driving social and gender equity, enhancing access to public spaces, and making cities healthier and more livable.

? Stay for the discussion!*The event will conclude with a look at how these initiatives align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how walkability is key in climate action plans. Plus, there will be an opportunity for audience questions!

Don’t miss this chance to engage with urban changemakers and learn how walkability can create a brighter future for cities.

Objectives

Evidencing the connection between walkable cities solutions to social and sustainable urban issues, and showing real cases in Brazil to inspire other countries, mainly from the global south to make their solution on street and public spaces projects in their realities. Open a dialogue with other countries on the importance of walkable environments to promote equity. Promote brazilian good projects and solutions by making them as references. Discuss next steps and how to stimulate more projects to promote walkability in cities.
