IOM - International Organization for Migration
As people migrate from rural to urban centers, significant changes have occurred, including increased CO2 emissions, economic growth, access to education, and diversity. The IOM expo space will demonstrate how local actions driven by migrants' needs and contributions enhance urban resilience and inclusivity. Focusing on sustainable housing, climate adaptation, social cohesion, integration, and financial empowerment, the exhibition will show how incorporating migration into urban planning creates dynamic, sustainable, and thriving communities. It aims to emphasize that sustainable urban futures are founded on inclusive local actions.
Cities face major challenges related to migration management and climate change. Population movements towards urban areas are increasing due to disasters, climate change, and environmental degradation. The IPCC report highlights that millions of urban residents are at risk from climate hazards such as droughts and coastal-specific threats. However, cities often lack the power and capacity to manage these issues effectively. IOM advocates for integrating human mobility and climate change into policies at all levels. The World Urban Forum and UNCOP29 provide platforms to address these challenges, promoting the inclusion of human mobility in urban planning and climate action, aiming for enhanced NDCs by 2025.
