UCL's Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction | Tomorrow's Cities Urban Risk Hub
How can we accommodate urban growth in 'new', rapidly growing cities while addressing risks in equitable ways? This exhibition will present a diverse range of research and policy-driven projects led or supported by UCL’s Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction. A key feature will be Tomorrow’s Cities – a global community of practice dedicated to reducing disaster risk for marginalised and equity-deprived groups in rapidly urbanising regions of the Global South. We will highlight case studies from ten cities across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, showcasing an innovative, future-oriented, risk-informed decision support tool. This groundbreaking tool integrates participatory planning methods that blend spatial techniques with the arts and humanities, such as storytelling, collaborative drawing, and co-mapping, alongside bespoke digital tools. These tools enable the exploration and evaluation of critical decisions – from spatial interventions to soft policies – aimed at improving decision-making processes in contexts where data scarcity and inequalities pose significant challenges.
