Marie Huchzermeyer
Marie Huchzermeyer, a Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa, directs the Centre for Urbanism and Built Environment Studies (CUBES). Within CUBES, she leads a three-year City Studio with a focus on transdisciplinary engagement, research and pedagogy in an area of Johannesburg that displays stark socio spatial and economic inequality. Marie has written and co-edited several books on related themes, including “Cities With ‘Slums’: From Informal Settlement Eradication to a Right to the City in Africa” and “Tenement Cities: From 19th Century Berlin to 21st Century Nairobi”. In this and other writing, she explores, critiques and seeks to push the boundary of policy responses in the field of housing and human settlements. Her research interests also span the making of urban policy in South Africa and institutional arrangements that facilitate the work required for informal settlement transformation.
