The Theme of the Second Session of WUF was “Cities: Crossroads of cultures, inclusiveness and integration”
The Second Session of the World Urban Forum was held in Barcelona, Spain, from 13 to 17 September 2004.
The session was opened on 13 September 2004 at 10.00 a.m. by the outgoing Chair, Hon. Ms. Sankie D.Mthembi-Mahanyele, the former Minister of Housing of South Africa, who welcomed participants to the Session.
The World Urban Forum centres around dialogues. The aim is to provide an open forum for debate and discussion for everyone from government offi cials and mayors to academics and slum dwellers. Simply stated, the World Urban Forum is a think tank that does away with the formal rules of procedure which usually govern official UN meetings.
At the Second World Urban Forum there were nine dialogues that were divided into two distinct clusters: Partners’ Dialogues & Thematic Dialogues. There was also written a tenth paper concerning gender issues, which are cross cutting and therefore included in all dialogues. The Partners’ Dialogues covered issues concerning Urban Cultures, Urban Realities, Urban Governance and Urban Renaissance.
