Introduction
UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) and the Bureau of Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) and UN-Habitat ROAS – in collaboration with Oliver Wyman - are developing a policy framework “Sustainable Reconstruction: A Framework Accelerating an Inclusive and Sustainable Recovery” focusing on countries emerging from conflict and going through the process of infrastructure reconstruction in the Arab States region.
Sustainable reconstruction in a post-crisis setting may require additional considerations in comparison to post-natural disaster reconstruction. While the immediate post-conflict phase is usually one of stabilization through relief measures, there is a transition phase that involves temporary reconstruction and short-term problem solving; and then there is a long process of rebuilding. Holistic and inclusive approaches are crucial in post-conflict reconstruction in order to achieve sustainable recovery and development.
This technical session will present the elements of the draft policy framework and discuss experiences from the Arab region. The aim is to generate dialogue and receive inputs and feedback from partners and relevant experts working in the area of sustainable reconstruction in post-conflict contexts.
