Summary

The event will provide a space to present ECLAC publications and knowledge products related to Urban Development in the Latin American Caribbean (LAC) Region and open a space for dialogue regarding the pertinence of the content presented to support local and national decision making and policy development.
The "Urban Report of Latina America and the Caribbean" report, developed by ECLAC, will provide a comprehensive overview of the socio-economic dynamics of urban areas across Latin America and the Caribbean. This data-driven report aims to aid in the effective planning and implementation of sustainable urban development strategies, allowing policymakers to track progress, identify challenges, and craft policies to improve urban living conditions, directly supporting SDGs related to sustainable cities (SDG 11), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), poverty reduction (SDG 1), and reducing inequalities (SDG 10). Given the region's high level of urbanization, tracking the development of cities is indispensable for ensuring that the benefits of agglomeration are more equitably distributed, thereby contributing to the broader agenda of sustainable development.
Furthermore, ECLAC’s Urban and Cities Platform of Latin America and the Caribbean, where the Urban Panorama is housed, will be presented. The platform responds to the great need to collect and analyse information related to urban areas of the region. It provides its users with an objective tool to monitor the implementation of the urban dimension of the 2030 Agenda, the New Urban Agenda and the Regional Action Plan for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and provides a space to facilitate the exchange of experiences and ideas in order to strengthen regional, national and subnational capacities for sustainable urban development and promote South-South cooperation as a horizontal learning mechanism in the region.
The objective of the Platform is to present information from both the national level and the sub-national level / city level. It seeks to provide its users with a means of visualizing information through a friendly and interactive interface. The information presented can be of use for decision makers as well as members of academia and civil society.
The event will open with the two presentations and be followed by representatives of academia, local and national authorities from the LAC region and beyond.

Objectives

This event aims to:
• Present tools to follow progress in issues related to urban development in the LAC region.
• Dissemination of the ECLAC Urban Panorama and the Urban and Cities Platform of Latin America and the Caribbean to foster awareness and understanding of critical urban development issues in the LAC region.
• Foster evidence-based policy making by providing data and tools for decision makers and policy makers in LAC.
• Explore the uses of the information provided for national and local level decision making and to support the implementation of international urban related agendas (particularly the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development).
