Halfway to 2030, the global community is far from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Cities, while being significant emitters, also bear the brunt of climate change's impact. Though these hubs of innovation champion ambitious green initiatives, mitigating their environmental footprint requires acknowledging the unequal effects of shifting towards low carbon development for communities and individuals.
City governments hold the power to steer metropolises towards a future where economic growth, environmental stewardship, and social well-being intertwine. This vision is embodied in the concept of a just transition, where carbon neutrality and shared prosperity go hand in hand. However, limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires embracing urban resilience. Crucially, this shift must prioritise fairness to avoid social backlash or exacerbating existing inequalities.
This World Urban Forum session hosted by Metropolis and Marmara Municipalities Union explores a powerful approach: Nature-based solutions. Nature-based solutions offer a paradigm shift in urban development that goes beyond mitigating problems. By strategically integrating green infrastructure, urban forests, and wetlands into the urban fabric, nature-based solutions can enhance sustainability, improve air and water quality, mitigate flood risks, and promote biodiversity.
The social dimension of nature-based solutions is equally transformative. Green spaces act as social catalysts, fostering community cohesion and providing much-needed recreational spaces. Furthermore, nature-based solutions have the potential to bolster economic vibrancy, attracting investment and generating new jobs within a flourishing green economy.
Cities need ambitious solutions, but ones that don't leave anyone behind. In this session, we'll bring together the unique experiences, innovative solutions and best practices of cities from around the world.
