This event will demonstrate the importance of local government leadership in ending violence against women and girls to create safe and sustainable cities, harnessing expertise from different sectors for sustainable and inclusive urban development.
The event will bring together different stakeholders, including from local government and women’s rights organisations from the Arab States region to showcase how action at local level is being taken to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and other forms of violence against women and girls in public spaces in multiple settings.
UN Women’s longstanding Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative for Women and Girls includes comprehensive programming in nearly 60 cities, in 33 countries. It involves strong partnerships with local, state, and national governments, national and global women’s rights organizations/networks, UN agencies, and the private sector through well-established coordination mechanisms to facilitate action across sectors and different government departments to implement gender responsive urban and transportation planning, transform harmful social norms and strengthen data, legislation and policies in prevention and response to sexual harassment and other forms of violence against women in public spaces in different settings, including urban, rural, workplaces and online.
The session will include different stakeholders who will share their contribution to comprehensive safe spaces programming partnerships in the Arab States region that implement multiple SDGs (SDG 5,11, 16) at the local level, sharing good practices, tools and different mechanisms that have helped build to sustain and build to scale integrated approaches over time adapted to different country contexts.
- Raise awareness on key contributions made by different sectors to ensure sustainable safe spaces partnerships over time to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls
- Share strategies used by multi stakeholders to deepen, expand the scope of, and build to scale integrated approaches to end violence in new settings and contexts in the Arab States region
- Highlight how lessons learned in catalytic policy and programme action to end violence against women in diverse settings have been applied to strengthen results at the local level
- Contribute to advancing multiple SDGs, notably Goal 5, target 5.2; Goal 11, target 11.7; and Goal 16
