Summary

The event will bring together different stakeholders, including from local government and women’s rights organisations from the Arab States region to showcase how action at local level is being taken to prevent and respond to sexual harassment and other forms of violence against women and girls in public spaces in multiple settings.

UN Women’s longstanding Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Initiative for Women and Girls includes comprehensive programming in nearly 60 cities, in 33 countries. It involves strong partnerships with local, state, and national governments, national and global women’s rights organizations/networks, UN agencies, and the private sector through well-established coordination mechanisms to facilitate action across sectors and different government departments to implement gender responsive urban and transportation planning, transform harmful social norms and strengthen data, legislation and policies in prevention and response to sexual harassment and other forms of violence against women in public spaces in different settings, including urban, rural, workplaces and online.

The session will include different stakeholders who will share their contribution to comprehensive safe spaces programming partnerships in the Arab States region that implement multiple SDGs (SDG 5,11, 16) at the local level, sharing good practices, tools and different mechanisms that have helped build to sustain and build to scale integrated approaches over time adapted to different country contexts.
