Summary

This event centers around UN-Habitat’s engagement supporting Member States in implementing human rights recommendations as agreed during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). As such, the aim is to showcase the mutually reinforcing role of sustainable urban development and the New Urban Agenda, and human rights. The event will therefore consider the increased impact that can be achieved when local development interventions are human rights-based, as well as, in turn, when human rights projects holistically consider urbanization as a tool to advance progress.
This will be illustrated through two national examples – that of Morocco, where UN-Habitat’s work is directly linked to Morocco’s UPR commitments and still in early stages of implementation, and that of Brazil, where human rights-based urban planning has been enabled through a long-standing culture of promoting human rights in cities.
The event will also touch on a new publication issued by UN-Habitat in 2024 focusing on the interlinkages between urban planning and human rights.
