Urban Regeneration is emerging as a foremost tool to localize the SDGs and accelerate their implementation. Transcending previous approaches, it shifts the focus from a primarily physical transformation to a more strategic, long-term vision of urban development process. It emphasizes social equity and environmental sustainability, encompassing diverse initiatives.
Urban regeneration, or attempts towards it, are taking place in cities everywhere, all the time. However, it involves the challenge of promoting physical and social changes while avoiding possible adverse risks such as evictions, loss of livelihoods or gentrification among others.
Identifying and documenting good urban regeneration practices that have driven social inclusion is crucial to foster knowledge exchange and innovation. Valuable lessons can be learned from both their accomplishments and their pitfalls, thereby informing future initiatives and avoiding common mistakes. These examples serve as tangible models for policymakers, urban planners, and community leaders, informing future initiatives and guiding similar challenges in their own cities.
The event aims to launch the Sustainable Urban Regeneration Atlas (SUR ATLAS), an interactive and open access repository of worldwide case studies of urban regeneration. The SUR ATLAS is created to discover, analyze and explore the most innovative solutions to address social, environmental and economic urban challenges. It represents a reference source for cities, researchers, professionals, and students aiming to increase knowledge of sustainable regeneration solutions. The event will feature presentations of meaningful case studies of urban regeneration exploring strategies and policies adopted in abandoned urban areas and to generate social value for all.
Starting with an introduction of the SUR ATLAS Platform, participants will be presented to the key features and to inspiring projects included in the repository, each showcasing unique strategies for creating social value and fostering community empowerment.
Through a panel discussion, experts and practitioners in the field of urban sustainable regeneration from different sectors and countries will be engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue exploring topics such as community engagement, inclusive growth, and sustainable design. During the Q&A, all participants will join the discussion with project leaders and experts, allowing for deeper exploration of key themes and issues related to urban regeneration and social value creation.
