Summary

With 15-25% of urban populations living with a form of disability, cities often fail to accommodate the diverse mobility needs of their residents. This session aims to shift this paradigm, focusing on how urban environments with their mobility options and services need to work together to enable full access to the city for all.

We’ll explore the role of different sectors in delivering on the fundamental right for universal access, and look at examples from activists, researchers, policy makers and the transport community dedicated to advancing the universal access agenda.

The discussion will emphasize the importance of participatory planning and the engagement of diverse voices in shaping policies, regulations, and investments. Following the panel, a networking session will offer attendees a chance to connect with cross-sector professionals and exchanges ideas and insights.

Objectives

-Expand and Strengthen the Community Advocating for Universal Accessibility.

The session aims to cultivate a growing network of individuals and organizations committed to advancing the cause of universal access in cities. This community will benefit from ongoing opportunities to share knowledge, experiences, and insights through regular communication channels, peer exchanges, and collaborative activities. The goal is to create a supportive environment where members can learn from one another, develop best practices, and collectively advocate for change in urban planning and mobility policies.

-Inspire Action and Highlight Practical Solutions

By framing discussions through the lens of policy, participatory planning, innovation, and data-driven research, the session seeks to inspire participants to take actionable steps toward creating more inclusive urban spaces. Presentations and case studies will showcase successful strategies and models that have effectively addressed barriers to accessibility, illustrating how different actors—from policymakers to grassroots organizations—can contribute to transforming cities into universally accessible environments.

- Facilitate Peer Exchange and Professional Networking

The session provides a platform for cross-sector dialogue and networking, enabling participants to engage with experts from diverse fields such as transport, urban planning, advocacy, and research. Through interactive discussions and a post-panel networking opportunity, attendees will have the chance to form meaningful connections, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations to advance universal access agendas within their respective cities and regions.
