In cities devastated by war and disasters and facing internal displacement, should housing be at the centre of crisis recovery and reconstruction?
For internally displaced persons in cities, access to adequate housing with secure tenure and local public service provision not only addresses their immediate loss of home, but can also be at the centre of ensuring other fundamental rights, including physical safety, health and livelihoods. Yet, housing is costly, complex and only one of many priorities authorities must balance as they rebuild shattered urban areas and establish conditions for durable solutions to internal displacement. This event convenes diverse panelists working at the intersection of internal displacement and urbanisation, including municipal leaders, internally displaced persons, researchers and UN actors. They will showcase examples of how cities are recovering from war and disasters in ways that address internal displacement and include IDPs.
