Summary

Interactive workshop will highlight historic and current examples of inclusive low environmental impact affordable developments that house generations of residents. Leaders in government, finance, and design will share methods of creating and maintaining resilient communities, that support human development by providing safety, health, inclusivity, affordability, and beauty. These exemplary models are built to last. Join an inspiring international multidisciplinary engaement that will progress the practice of participatory design. Explore case studies from four continents with architects, funders, public officials, researchers and team members that have significantly advanced the SDGs through housing planning and design with communities. Share your own successes and challenges as critically discussing the best path to practices and policies that will increase the number of localities that achieve SDGs through housing. The session addresses the WUF 13 theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities”. Local, federal, private, cultural and youth-led resources are included in the characteristics of effective partnerships across levels and sectors that work TOGETHER in each neighborhood as well as strategies for collaborative incremental just community building that can be implemented NOW. Key elements of Dialog 4, “The climate-housing” nexus included in the training are: 1) Inclusive participatory process and strategies for engaging diverse populations including youth in local planning, action, and evaluation. 2) Private/public partnership formation methods and collaborative roles. 3) Developing national and international policies, resources and procedures that support locally informed solutions. 4) Attaining just, sustainable and resilient development that responds to the needs of all, including the most vulnerable women, peoples, environments, and populations. 5) Sharing inspiring examples of successful and beautiful housing and community development. 6) Discussing strategies that lead to incremental and continuing community enhancement that achieves SDGs and improves the built and natural environment for all. The session will conclude with a conversation about the Dialog 4 question prompt: > What insights can be drawn from historic and current case studies and applied to your work? Participants will receive a follow up opportunity to continue to engage after the training with fellow practitioners.
