Summary

Extreme heat is rapidly becoming a defining condition of urban life around the world—from the Gulf states to the Mediterranean, from arid Australia to rapidly urbanizing sub-Saharan Africa—yet the architectural and urban planning mainstream has yet to develop a serious, affordable response. This lecture presents passive design strategies as the most immediate and cost-effective tool available: building orientation, thermal mass, natural ventilation, shading systems, and material selection that dramatically reduce cooling demand before active systems are even considered. Drawing on professional practice and research at Bond University and Zayed University, it demonstrates that climate-adapted design is not a luxury reserved for high-end buildings but a set of principles that can and must be applied to affordable housing at scale. The decisions made on the drawing board today will determine whether the cities of 2070 are livable—or not.
