Summary

This session is an interactive capacity-building training designed to support urban practitioners, policy makers and civil society actors in mainstreaming inclusion—particularly gender and age—into housing and urban development projects. It forms part of a broader capacity-building initiative aimed at creating a sustainable network of trained local leaders and professionals working at the intersection of gender, housing, land and basic services, particularly in crisis and recovery contexts. The training marks the official launch of Housing Her City and builds on the Her City methodology, which promotes participatory digital tools for inclusive and resilient urban environments. This training begins with an introduction to Housing Her City and an overview of the Her City approach and its capacity-building ecosystem, including e-learning modules, professional trainings, academic syllabus and online trainings. Participants will then explore concrete case studies from Uganda and Ukraine, focusing on inclusive housing and urban recovery in crisis and post-crisis contexts. The training will also present newly developed guidance materials available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish and Ukrainian, highlighting their global applicability and context specific relevance in informal settlements in Uganda and recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine. Participants will engage in a collective activity on how to mainstream inclusion throughout the project cycle by focusing on the Her City Kampala project as a practical example for scenario planning. Interactive group work will allow participants to experiment with Her City digital tools and participatory methods, enabling hands-on learning and peer exchange. The training concludes with reflections on how inclusive and participatory approaches contribute to safer, more resilient and sustainable cities and communities.
