Mayors for Digital Cooperation (MDC): Inaugural Assembly
Hosted by: UN-Habitat and the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET)
By invitation only
Summary
The Inaugural Assembly of the Mayors for Digital Cooperation (MDC) convenes mayors and senior city leaders as part of a new global network advancing the localization of the Global Digital Compact (GDC) in cities. Hosted by UN‑Habitat and the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, the session marks the first official meeting of the MDC Assembly, the network’s primary decision‑making body.
Held against the backdrop of widening digital inequalities and the rapid digitization of essential urban services, the Assembly focuses on digital inclusion as a driver of access to adequate housing and basic services. As digital systems increasingly mediate access to water, energy, waste services, housing opportunities, health and education, many cities, particularly in the Global South, continue to face challenges related to connectivity, affordability, digital skills and institutional capacity.
The session introduces the MDC’s mandate, governance structure and draft 2026-2029 roadmap, while inviting mayors to join the network and shape its collective priorities. It combines strategic dialogue with a practical learning segment showcasing digital inclusion tools, UN system support, and real‑world city and partner case examples. The Assembly also strengthens linkages with SDG localization efforts, including through the UN Local2030 Coalition, positioning digital transformation as a key accelerator for inclusive, resilient and people‑centred urban development.
