Summary

One Health is a collaborative approach recognizing the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health and addressing global challenges across sectors. Rapid urbanization and expanding human activities have degraded ecosystems, intensified disasters, and increased infectious disease risks. Close contact between humans and wildlife has contributed to pandemics, highlighting the need to rethink housing, land use, and urban planning from a One Health perspective. This event will showcase solutions for sustainable development and ecosystem conservation from a One Health perspective. Keynote Speech: Building on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, cities at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health need the One Health approach for sustainable, resilient, and safe urban futures. The keynote will present the significance of One Health for future cities and generations, delivered by the President of the World Veterinary Association and FAVA One Health Fukuoka Office. Case 1: Community and Housing Recovery in Japan In 2017, severe flooding and landslides in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, damaged homes and infrastructure. During recovery, public works based on the One Health concept were implemented considering biodiversity and habitats. River restoration created diverse environments for riparian vegetation and species conservation, including endangered species. Community revitalization was advanced through disaster-focused collaboration among residents, local governments, and experts. Additional initiatives included fuel-cell BRT, an Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program to create new regional attractions, and overseas film productions showcasing the area’s natural landscapes with local participation. This case highlights multistakeholder collaboration toward resilient and sustainable cities. Case 2: One Health Disaster Response in the Philippines Natural disasters affect human lives, animal health, and the environment, revealing interdependence. This case study introduces One Health initiatives in the Philippines promoting animal welfare, food security, and ecosystem conservation. Case 3: Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Protection and Resilient Community Building Coastal ecosystems are crucial for biodiversity, livelihoods and community well-being. From a One Health perspective, protecting and restoring these ecosystems is key to sustainable coexistence. This case study highlights collaborative initiatives, including youth participation.
