In emerging economies, particularly those in the Global South, rapid urbanization has led to a worsening of urban challenges such as population concentration, traffic congestion, and air pollution. To achieve sustainable urban development, it is necessary to explore strategies based on advanced urban policies and urban development models.
Furthermore, as the importance of sustainable urban development—including responses to climate change and the preservation of biodiversity—is being discussed within various international frameworks, Japan is prioritizing efforts such as securing urban green spaces to enhance urban sustainability.
As a response to these urban challenges, this session will feature discussions based on the distinctive initiatives of various countries, focusing on “Transit-Oriented Development”—an approach to urban development that Japan has historically pursued, integrating urban development with the expansion of public transportation—and the urban green transformation.
