Urban Capacity Lab - Cifal Global Network Advancing City Action Through Capacity Development

The Urban Capacity Lab: CIFAL Global Network for City Action and Training is an interactive, practice-oriented session designed to translate urban challenges into concrete capacity-building and city action solutions. It combines real CIFAL case studies, participatory problem-solving, live co-design exercises, and youth-led innovation to strengthen local leadership and institutional capacity for sustainable urban development. The session is structured around two complementary learning tracks: 1. Urban Capacity Lab (Practitioners & Decision-Makers) Participants engage in rapid CIFAL case showcases, followed by facilitated thematic labs where they identify real capacity gaps affecting housing, governance, resilience, and inclusive urban development. Through a live co-design sprint, groups develop mini City Capacity Action Plans, outlining training priorities, institutional reforms, and scalable CIFAL learning models. A final marketplace exchange enables peer learning, partnership-building, and commitments to pilot or replicate successful approaches. 2. Model CGN Youth Boot Camp (Future City Leaders) Running in parallel, the Model CGN Youth Boot Camp immerses young participants in a simulation exercise where they design their own CIFAL Center aligned with the WUF13 theme. Youth teams will define a city challenge, propose a training portfolio, design partnership models, and present a mock CIFAL operational plan addressing safe housing, urban resilience, and inclusive communities. This hands-on experience builds leadership, systems thinking, and innovation skills while amplifying youth voices in shaping urban futures. Learning Focus Areas Training content covers urban governance, leadership development, inclusive planning, resilience and risk reduction, university–city partnerships, civic innovation, and sustainable local economic development, with a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, peer exchange, and applied capacity building. By the end of the session, participants — both practitioners and youth — will leave with practical tools, tested training models, prototype action plans, and partnership pathways within the CIFAL Global Network, ensuring that learning translates into real-world city impact beyond WUF13.
