UN-Habitat Executive Director calls for action on housing ahead of WUF13
With nearly three billion people living in inadequate housing conditions — including over 1 billion in informal settlements and slums and more than 300 million experiencing homelessness — the global housing crisis continues to intensify, driven by climate change, conflict and growing inequalities. WUF13 will place adequate housing at the centre of the global agenda, focusing on turning commitments into action.
Taking place from 17 to 22 May 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan, under the theme “Housing the world: Safe and resilient cities and communities,” the Forum will convene thousands of leaders and experts from governments, civil society, the private sector and communities.
A global moment to accelerate urban action
In her message ahead of the Forum, the Executive Director highlights the urgency of today’s urban challenges and the critical role cities play in shaping inclusive, resilient, and sustainable futures.
“Some of the biggest challenges of our time are playing out in cities. However, everyday communities are working to build more inclusive and resilient places to live. The World Urban Forum is where we come together to share knowledge, to build alliances and find solutions to improve lives in cities everywhere,” she said.
A platform for dialogue, partnerships and solutions
The World Urban Forum serves as a global platform for dialogue, collaboration and action, where ideas are shared, partnerships are formed and concrete solutions take shape across key urban priorities - from housing and basic services to climate resilience and inclusive growth.
