OKABE, Akiko
Architect and Professor with the Department of Socio-Cultural Environmental Studies (2015-) and the Department of Architecture (2025-), at the University of Tokyo. PhD in Environmental Studies (2005). NUA Expert Group member in 2015-16.
Her publications include "Housing by People" (translated into Japanese, 2025; original in English by J. Turner in 1976), "The Future Based on Sharing beyond Ownership" (2021), "High Density Megacities" (2017), "Barcelona" (2010), and "Sustainable Cities" (2003).
Okabe’s work on urban upgrading via stakeholder participation in Jakarta received the Regional Holcim Award 2014 among other awards. "Gonjiro", a community project based in a thatched roof farmhouse in Japan, received the PACRIM award in 2018.
