Claudia Lopez Hernandez

Claudia López Hernandez served as Mayor of Bogotá from January 2020 to December 2023, becoming the city's first female and first openly LGBTQ+ mayor. During her tenure, she focused on environmental sustainability, urban planning, social justice, and anti-corruption initiatives. Prior to that, López served as a Senator of the Republic of Colombia, where she gained recognition for her fight against corruption, achieving unprecedented results and establishing herself as a key political figure. Her determination and ability to mobilize collective action have earned her respect in both academia and public service, making her the first woman elected by popular vote to Colombia's second most important office. López holds a degree in finance and international relations from Universidad Externado de Colombia, a master’s degree in public administration and urban policy from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in political science from Northwestern University. She is currently a Harvard ALI fellow.
