Jan Fransen

Jan Fransen (PhD, MA in Development Studies) is the Lead Researcher in Urban Governance and Resilience at IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam. A former Deputy Director of IHS, he coordinates and conducts research focused on inclusive, smart, and resilient urban communities. With 30 years of experience in over 30 countries, Jan is an expert in integrating marginalized communities into urban development. His current research on community resilience spans the Netherlands, Kenya, and Indonesia, employing community-based and participatory methods. Jan is a prolific author, co-supervises PhD students, lectures in master programs, and offers short courses. His work primarily focuses on Africa, Asia, and Europe.
