Summary

The City We Need is Affordable Vol V is the result of the continuing work of FIABCI to represent the private sector as a Business & Industry Partner of the UN-Habitat World Urban Campaign. The theme of this volume is “People at the Center” and features housing projects of transformation, preservation, instant housing, and technical innovation. Projects are included from Angeles City, Philippines on starter homes for working families; historic preservation of the Lathrop Homes Public Housing Project in Chicago; a Transit Oriented Develop project in Jakarta, Indonesia to provide 300,000 homes with government subsidy and an aging in place project in Sarawak, Malaysia to allow senior citizens to move to end-of-life care within their established community. FIABCI has published City We Need is Affordable volumes every year since 2016 and continues to support the UN-Habitat’s New Urban Agenda to make our cities safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. People at the center of design and urban planning. People at the center of policy making and governance. People’s needs must come first as we continue to transform our ideas of how to build housing and expand the market to include people at every income level. This moment requires us to reexamine our priorities and consider our responsibilities to each other. Multiple crises provide multiple opportunities and now is the time to redouble our efforts to meet the world’s housing needs.

Objectives

Promote successful affordable housing solutions from France, the U.S., Puerto Rico, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Introduce important strategies including transformation and renovation of existing stock, historic preservation, instant housing from shipping containers, self building, starter homes, aging in place, transit-oriented development and Community Land Trusts. Solicit new successful project for Vol VI which will debut at World Habitat Day October 3 in Honolulu, HI.
