The spread of COVID-19 has exacerbated a pre-existing global housing crisis, which was already affecting millions of people.
As COVID-19 spread around the world, billions of people were told to stay at home. However, this simple preventative public health measure was and is impossible for people who are homeless, or live in unsafe or overcrowded housing. The absence of basic services, stress and unhealthy living conditions also contribute to poor health.
Housing is a fundamental human right and has been central in the battle against COVID-19. The special session will discuss the challenges posed by the market failure to provide adequate, safe, and affordable housing for low-income and vulnerable populations in Europe and in Africa.
