Summary

Inadequate waste management practices in developing countries have led to environmental pollution, health hazards. Cities are central to tackling both the drivers and impacts of climate change, and the ineﬃcient use of resources and add to the impacts of climate crisis. Unprecedented urbanization rate and forecasted GDP growth could result in exponential growth in GHG emissions from waste in future. By integrating circularity concepts, leveraging technology, and engaging stakeholders, developing countries can address its waste management challenges and contribute to global sustainability goals, sustainable urbanization and reduce climate impacts. Arcadis, UN-Habitat and the Egypt Ministry of Local Development will discuss best practices and management tools for integrated and circular waste. The Waste Wise Cities Tool consists of seven steps to guide cities on how to collect data on MSW generated, collected, and managed in controlled facilities. Presentations will include case studies of tool outputs to identify appropriate waste collection and transportation mechanisms and safe treatment and disposal technologies.

The event will be divided into two parts:

Part I (1 hour) – Presentations providing knowledge sharing regarding beneﬁts of municipal solid waste management tools to promote circularity through resource recovery. Visual communication products including brochures, case studies and project’s brief may be exhibited.

Part II (30 minutes)– Open discussion: Panel discussion among participants and collaborating partners to identify best practices and propose solutions to extend their impacts and replication.

Objectives

This event aims to inspire collaboration, foster knowledge exchange, and catalyze action by showcasing success stories and projects completed in countries across the globe. The event seeks to inspire dialogue, collaboration, and action among diverse stakeholders, and to foster a deeper understanding of the role of local government in supporting eﬀorts to address the climate crisis and promote sustainable, safe, resilient, and environmentally just cities and communities. The event will highlight the following principles:

1) Raise awareness about the importance of climate action in urban development strategies
2) Showcase successful examples of SWM in Pakistan, Egypt and other countries.
3) Foster dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders, including government entities, heritage conservation organizations, and urban development practitioners.
4) Explore opportunities for better targeting of global climate ﬁnance to support local governments in implementing climate-responsive initiatives.
5) Inspire other cities and regions to embark on similar initiatives, promoting climate-responsive initiatives worldwide
